iCare Kids Program Evaluation

In 2022, the Cary Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies partnered with College of Human Sciences faculty with Alabama Cooperative Extension appointments—Dr. Portia Johnson and Dr. Adrienne Duke-Marks—to implement and evaluate iCare Kids, an educational initiative designed to promote character, philanthropy, and financial literacy among youth.

By working collaboratively, the Cary Center and Extension faculty aimed to strengthen both the capacity for youth programming and the opportunities for scholarly research related to iCare Kids.

Under the leadership of Dr. Portia Johnson, the iCare Kids curriculum was adapted for delivery in elementary school classrooms by Human Sciences Regional Extension Agents (REAs). In 2025, the program was implemented across six regions in Alabama and evaluated in nine counties. Surveys assessed students’ knowledge, attitudes, and intentions related to character, philanthropy, and money management both before and after program participation. Parental consent was obtained prior to youth participation, and surveys were conducted anonymously. Data management and analysis were completed by graduate students in the Adolescent Development and Evaluation Lab, led by Dr. Adrienne Duke-Marks, in collaboration with undergraduate students working with Dr. Johnson.

This project reflects the Cary Center’s broader commitment to advancing research in philanthropy education and youth development - generating applied research that informs practice, strengthens communities, and fosters a culture of giving.
